Abstract
Manual trail-map creation is costly and time-consuming. This work constructs trail networks from public GPS observations using a growing self-organizing map, without requiring sequential traces, and evaluates the resulting networks for precision, completeness, and topological correctness against OpenStreetMap ground truth.

This journal article extends the earlier SIEDS work with a fuller evaluation of growing self-organizing maps for trail-network construction. The method is particularly effective on sparse networks without substantial GPS noise.
